Residencial Laginha is a hotel located at on the best places in Mindelo. The name already reveals that the hotel right in front of the famous Laginha, also known as the Copacabana of Mindelo. If you are located at the right side of Residencial Laginha, you will have a marvelous view. The white sandy beach and blue sea is really a spectacular view.
It’s a five minute walk to the center of Mindelo and you are 100 meters (300 feet) away from the cosy bars at Laginha beach. Everybody here knows the famous Caravel and in they built the new flashy Beach Bar
Residencial Laginha is well priced, especially when you look at the location. You cannot speak of any cohesion when you look at the prices here in Mindelo. It’s possible to rent something for 3 times the price of Residencial Laginha and wind up in a crappy place outside the city.
But what about the service, the rooms etc. of Residencial Laginha right? When you look at the reviews of famous sites like booking.com, you will only find a few. And they are not really good. People are complaining mainly about the same things, which are:
– No warm water
– No internet
– Staff does not know anything
– Staff does not speak English
Well, maybe they had problems or warm water in that period. They have warm water now. So that’s covered. I don’t expect (good) internet in Cape Verde. For me personally it’s a huge thing that is still holding back real innovation in Cape Verde. In the bars in front or next to Residencial Laginha they all have internet. At some bars you have to pay though, but still, don’t worry. You can use Facebook, send photo’s to friends and check your WhatsApp and Instagram.
And what about the staff then? The staff is friendly, but yes they don’t seem to speak English. I speak Portuguese, so I don’t have this problem, but mainly I have the advantage to get to know them. Mainly they lack initiative, like 90% of the personnel of the bars, restaurants and hotels here. They are shy, insecure and when they speak hardly a word English, they get afraid.
If you are willing to communicate with your hands, a good smile, they will get it done for you. The island is famous for not being ruined by tourists and commerce yet, well then you need to accept this too. Get the job done and learn then a word of two.It is important though to proactively communicate with them. This to avoid surprises. They will not proactively approach you. So if you want something, get it done yourself. This last remark, maybe a buzz killer for Western tourists, because you go on holiday so you can leave the thinking to the people who should take care of you.
Hence, for Western standards, this hotel is not really up to par. The staff needs to learn English, proactively approach the customers. It is also (which we read in the review as well) odd that you are not receiving an invoice or any proof of payment at all. It would also help to learn more about stuff which I can imagine a lot of tourists like to know (where is a good restaurant in the neighbourhood, what time does the supermarket close etc. etc.) If you need a hotel on a A-location for a low price, friendly staff and don’t have problems chasing the guys here once and then, then you will have an excellent stay at Residencial Laginha.
